But transformation at a systems level is only as strong as the people behind it.<\/p><p>Today, Sri Lanka stands at a defining moment. Our ability to build a digitally competitive workforce will determine whether we simply stabilise or position ourselves as serious players in the global digital economy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f7d678 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8f7d678\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Closing the skills gap: From awareness to action<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db3cec2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db3cec2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sri Lanka\u2019s literacy rate exceeds <strong>92%<\/strong>, and we produce over <strong>30,000 university graduates annually<\/strong>. Yet, organisations across sectors consistently report a shortage of <strong>industry ready digital talent<\/strong>, particularly in areas such as data analytics, AI, cybersecurity, and cloud technologies.<\/p><p>According to multiple industry estimates, the ICT sector alone requires <strong>over 200,000 skilled professionals<\/strong>, while the current workforce is significantly below that threshold. This gap is not just about numbers anymore; it is about capability.<\/p><p>We are seeing three clear disconnects:<\/p><ul><li>Academic qualifications vs. applied digital skills<\/li><li>Technical knowledge vs. business problem-solving ability<\/li><li>Traditional job roles vs. evolving digital expectations<\/li><\/ul><p>For businesses, this translates into slower innovation and reduced competitiveness. For the country, it risks limiting our ability to participate meaningfully in the global digital economy.<\/p><p>The path forward requires a shift from <strong>education as a one-time event<\/strong> to <strong>continuous, workplace-driven learning ecosystems<\/strong>. However, this has also contributed to a sustained outflow of skilled professionals.<\/p><p>Recent estimates suggest that <strong>over 300,000 Sri Lankans left the country for foreign employment between 2022 and 2024<\/strong>, with a notable proportion comprising skilled and semi-skilled professionals. The tech sector, in particular, continues to experience high mobility.<\/p><p>But the question we must ask is not just \u2018<em>Why do people leave?\u2019<\/em> but \u2018<em>What would make them stay? Or even return<\/em>?\u2019<\/p><p>The answer lies in three key areas:<\/p><ul><li>Access to meaningful, high-impact work<\/li><li>Exposure to global opportunities while based locally<\/li><li>Flexibility, growth, and competitive rewards<\/li><\/ul><p>Retention today is no longer about containment. It is about <strong>creating compelling employee value propositions<\/strong>. Platforms such as Upwork and LinkedIn indicate a steady rise in Sri Lankan professionals participating in the global gig and remote workforce.<\/p><p>This creates both a challenge and an opportunity.<\/p><p>Forward-looking organisations are responding by:<\/p><ul><li>Building <strong>distributed teams across regions<\/strong><\/li><li>Engaging <strong>diaspora talent on flexible models<\/strong><\/li><li>Offering <strong>hybrid work environments aligned with global standards<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>However, remote work success depends on more than flexibility. However, to scale beyond this, investors are increasingly evaluating:<\/p><ul><li>Depth, competency and quality of digital talent<\/li><li>Readiness for emerging technologies<\/li><li>Ability to scale teams quickly<\/li><\/ul><p>A digitally competitive workforce is no longer a supporting factor. It is a primary investment driver.<\/p><p>Sri Lanka has a unique opportunity to position itself as a <strong>regional hub for digital talent<\/strong>, particularly given its strong education base and cost competitiveness. But this requires coordinated action across the private sector, academia, and policymakers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54bd41f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"54bd41f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A leadership imperative<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33fc6f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"33fc6f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Building a digitally competitive workforce is not a long-term ambition.
