Ocean Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. is Sri Lanka’s largest weft knitted fabric manufacturer. Incorporated in 1994, the company began production in 1996 and today operates across all four phases of fabric production – knitting, dyeing, printing, and finishing – from its facility in the Biyagama Export Processing Zone. It is a joint venture between Hong Kong-based Fountain Set Holdings and Sri Lankan apparel groups Hirdaramani and Brandix and supplies leading international apparel brands.
With a workforce of more than 1,700 people spread across production, technical and administrative functions, Ocean Lanka is also known for its long-standing commitment to sustainable manufacturing and to the development of its people. That combination – industrial scale alongside a people-first culture – set the brief for its HR transformation.
The challenge
A manufacturing operation of this size generates HR work continuously. Shifts change. Attendance is captured in more than one place. Payroll has to be right, every cycle, for over 1,700 people. Before MiHCM, much of that work was carried manually.
What the HR team was up against
Manual, time-consuming administration.
Routine HR tasks consumed hours that the team wanted to spend on people, not paperwork.
Attendance data across multiple locations.
Records were collected separately and then consolidated by hand before they could be used.
Heavy manual intervention in payroll.
Salary calculation and validation depended on repeated manual checking, with the risk of error that always brings.
Limited employee access to HR services.
Employees had no direct route to their own information, so every request came back to HR.
No real-time view of the workforce.
Monitoring attendance — and the whereabouts of field employees — was difficult while it was happening.
Reporting that could not keep pace with decisions.
Management needed accuracy, compliance and reporting it could act on quickly.
The requirement was not simply a new system. It was a single, reliable source of workforce truth — one that HR, payroll, line management and employees could all work from.
Why MiHCM?
Ocean Lanka needed a platform that covered the full employee lifecycle in one place, worked on a factory floor as well as in an office, and could be configured to its processes rather than the other way round.
MiHCM offered an integrated, cloud-based HRIS with mobile-first employee access, geo-location enabled attendance and real-time integration between attendance and payroll, delivered by consultants with local statutory and manufacturing experience.
The Solution
MiHCM was implemented as a single integrated platform, module by module, with each element feeding the next.
What was deployed

The results
The gains showed up first in the work HR no longer had to do, and then in the quality of the information the business could see.
- Manual HR administration significantly reduced
Routine processing that once ran on spreadsheets and paper now runs in the platform. - Faster, more accurate payroll
Automated calculation and statutory deduction removed the bulk of manual validation from each cycle. - Improved attendance accuracy
Validated attendance data fed straight into payroll, reducing payroll discrepancies. - A better employee experience
Employees apply for leave, update their details and access payslips from their own phones. - Greater operational efficiency
Automated workflows moved approvals and requests along without manual chasing. - Stronger compliance position
Centralised employee records and audit trails support statutory reporting and review. - Real-time management visibility
Leadership can see workforce information as it stands, not as it stood last month.
